Roman bow brooch of Colchester Derivative Hinged type
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy bow brooch of Colchester Derivative hinged type dating to the Roman period, c. 43-100 AD. It demonstrates a tubular (circular sectioned) winged head, with a rectangular slot at its midpoint on the reverse face which originally would have accomodated the axis bar and hinged pin, though these are now missing in old damage along with the lower bow, foot and catchplate of the brooch. The head is plain, while the bow is 'D' shaped in section and curves strongly in profile, demonstrating a longitudinal central groove flanked on each sides by oblique hachured lines. Preserved in fair condition with a deep brownish patina interspersed by patches of green corrosion, it survives to a length of 21.52mm, 33.60mm wide at its head, and 4.79mm thick at the midpoint of the bow. It weighs 6.31g.
