Title
Roman brooch: Penannular brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy penannular brooch of Roman date. The brooch is Fowler's (1960) Type E (after Booth (2014)) with a flattened, decorated hoop and rolled back terminals that are decoratively notched with transverse grooves and recessed 'eye' holes and nostrils which together resemble an animal's head in abstract. The hoop of the brooch is decorated with continually repeated diagonal grooves, some overlapping and some almost runic in appearance. The pin is now missing from this example. Dr. Anna Booth comments "Type E is primarily late Roman c.AD 350-450, although it was produced from c.100 AD and there is some continued use until c.AD 600".
