Roman brooch: Penannular brooch
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy Roman penannular brooch, dating to the period AD 43 - 410. It is circular, measuring 27.11mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.34mm. The frame is round in section with tightly coiled terminals, which fold back on themselves at right angles to the plane of the ring and terminate in rounded knops. The pin is intact, undecorated and curls under the frame. It measures 2.88mm wide at this cuff, tapering inwards in width until a point, measuring 33.02mm in length. In total, the brooch weighs 4.6g.
