Title |
Roman chatelaine |
||
Description |
English: Roman copper alloy chatelaine, 93mm long, 23mm wide and 8mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a dark green patina and some corrosion and weighs 21.76 grams. The object consists of a sub-rectangular plate which has a semi-circular protrusion to accomodate a suspension loop in the centre of its upper edge. It has four large circular cut outs which leave a roughly cruciform shape. The lower edge of the plate has a circular sectioned band decorated with vertical incised lines. Below this at each end hangs a semi-circular lug, 6mm in diameter, which hold a circular bar with rivetted ends. Suspended on the bar by circular loops, are two circular sectioned shafts c.20mm long and 5mm in diameter, both identically decorated with three raised bands which have diagonal incisons, giving a rope effect. One has broken just below this, but the other continues to form a sub spherical knop which attaches to a flat plate. This has a rounded upper edge which tapers in and becomes a elongated rectangle. The lower edge of this is largely filled with a triangular sectioned groove, which tapers in width up the centre of the shaft for most of its length. This is probably a nail cleaner and the other shaft most likely contained a pair of tweezers. |
