Roman copper alloy bow brooch, AD 43-100
Description
English: Roman copper alloy dolphin type Colchester derivative, rear hook brooch, dating to AD 43-100. Length: 61 mm, width: 41 mm, thickness: 16 mm, weight: 25.6 grams.

The brooch has open semi-circular cross sectioned wings which are missing their spring. They are each decorated with two vertical raised bands with two lines of incised notches on each. The raised bands are flanked by three rounded depressions. The bow has a D shaped cross section and is also decoarted with two lines of incised notches, running down its centre. this is flanked by a linear ridge at each edge which tapers towards the now incomplete base. The back of the bow houses the remains of an openwork catchplate.
