Roman copper alloy headstud brooch
Description
English: Early Roman or Romano British enamelled copper alloy headstud or trumpet variant brooch. The wings have triangular recesses at the front, and at the rear a central vertical slot for the hinged pin and the remains of the axis bar. The pin is missing as is a large part of the catchplate. The arched bow reduces slightly in width from the head towards the pedestal foot. On the bow below the stud, decoration extends to the foot and is in the form of a central longitudinal rib witha hatched lozenge pattern. Half way along the bow is a waist consisting of three transverse ribs. The patterning was originally high lighted with enamel some of which remains The foot is moulded with horizontal ribs at the front and is plain on the innerside. The remains of the catch-plate extends half-way up the inside of the bow. The brooch has a green patina. Dates to between c75 and c200 AD. The length is 35.7mm, the width is 14.4mm and the weight 8.1g.
