Title
Roman copper alloy intial t shaped brooch
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy hinged colchester derivative intial T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 60-100. The brooch is largely complete, missing only its pin and with some abrasion to the rear of the catchplate and right wing tip.

At the head of the brooch the wings survive to a width of 22.2mm, these are cylindrical, c. 3.8mm in diameter, and retain a copper alloy axis bar in situ. A rectangular slot is cut into the reverse of the head to accomodate a hinged pin, the perforated lug of which also survives, two parallel, longitudinal grooves have been incised into either wing tip, on the front only.

The bow projects from the head with a width of 7.6mm; 3.2mm thick. It is plano-convex in cross section, with a slight concavity of the reverse near the head, and with the bow flanked by slightly converging ridges at the head. The bow tapers into a simple, unelaborated foot, although with a slight knop visible in profile. An unperforated, sub-triangular catchplate projects from the reverse, giving an maximum thickness of 6.0mm and surviving to a height of 11.0mm.

Dimensions: length 40.7mm; width 22.2mm; thickness 6.0mm; weight 5.13g.

The form, simplistic cast decoration and lack of headloop would all suggest an identification as an intial T-shaped brooch, dated to the Flavian period (Bayley & Butcher 2004).
