Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 16.17mm in length, 12.78mm in width, and 4.91mm in depth. The brooch weighs 1.25 grams, and is missing the rear portion of the horse's body, as well as it legs, and part of its head.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing right. The rider is leant backwards, and although much of the detail is lost, a peaked hairstyle or helmet is evident. However, most of the detail we might expect on the horse is completely disguised by the worn condition of the object.

5 cells are distinguishable, although no enamel residue is discernible to the naked eye. One is a triangular recess on the body of the rider, alongside a second smaller, oval cell. Two elongated oval cells are running vertically down the chest of the horse, whilst a final cell runs horizontally along the body of the horse. Whilst most of the brooch has a greenish patina, the cells are more distinctly brown.

The reverse of the brooch shows the remains of the catchplate, but is missing both the lug and pin.
