Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 23.2mm in length, 17.35mm in width, and 5.2mm in depth. The brooch weighs 2.04 grams, and is missing the face and legs of the horse.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing to the right. The rider is leaning backwards slightly on a triangular body. Much of the facial features have been eroded, but there is slight circular indentation to suggest an eye and the ridged outline of the rider's head denotes a peaked hairstyle or helmet. Two of the brooches four cells are on the body of the rider; one linear cell running diagonally downwards from the rider's head to the body of the horse, and over a second smaller circular cell. The former cell is possibly a representation of the rider's arm, with a small pointed hook serving to suggest the shoulder.

The detailing on the horse, similarly to the rider, has been lost to erosion, but a ridged outline depicts its mane. As with the mane, the tail also appears to have been given distinct hairs through grooves. The two cells on the horse's body are an elongated oval cell positioned on the horse's chest, and a linear cell running the length of its body, ending in a curve on its hind leg. The former cell contains vestiges of red enamel.

The reverse of the brooch bears the remnants of the pinning mechanism including the catchplate and lug. The pin is missing.
