Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 27mm in length, 20mm in width, and 6mm in depth. The brooch weighs 2.43 grams, and is relatively intact, although the legs of the horse are missing.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider galloping to the right. The rider is leant backwards, probably to imply the motion of the horse, and has a peaked hairstyle or helmet detailed by small notches. Facial features, such as a nose and mouth are evident, as well as a circular indentation denoting the eye. Two of the brooch's four cells are on the body of the rider; a small circular cell, and one linear cell depicting the riders arm, and even suggesting a shoulder through its hooked end. These cells probably contained blue enamel.

The horse is detailed in a similar manner to its rider. Grooves have been used to suggest its tail and mane, and a circular indentation for the eye. The face of this horse is characterised by a blunt snout. The two cells on the body of the horse, one elongated oval on the chest, and one hooked cell running the length of the body, also contained blue enamel. Moreover, there is evidence of silver wire being used, particularly on the rear portion of the horse.

The reverse of the brooch shows the remains of the catchplate, and the lug, which has traces of a corroded iron pin.
