Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a Duck
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch. The brooch is in the form of a three-dimensional duck shown sitting with wings folded in. The back of the duck is convex and hollow, and decorated with three rows of cells. The row down the centre of the back comprise a series of narrow crescents however no enamel survives in any of them. To either side is another row of crescents. The crescents on these two rows are wider and are arched towards the head, whereas those down the centre arch towards the rear. Traces of blue enamel survive in a few cells. The neck is oval in cross-section and the head is missing. Two lugs for the pin survive on the reverse at the rear, and a small catchplate survives beneath the neck. Butcher and Bayley (2004, p174) consider this type of brooch to be a British product.
