Title |
Roman cosmetic mortar |
||
Description |
English: Broken cosmetic mortar, about half missing (old breaks). There is a very worn stub of central loop, and an animal-head (ram or bull) terminal. The animal head has a simple tapering snout, lozengiform in section, and low (worn?) ears or horns. The groove is deep and the walls are thin; on the outside they are decorated with triangular champlevé cells for enamel (no trace of enamel now surviving). Five cells survive on each wall but as the last of these is central to the loop there may originally have been nine. The cells seem not to be particularly well-made or deep, but this may partly be due to the general wear over the object. The mortar has been bent, perhaps quite recently, just over halfway from the loop to the terminal. The original length may have been c. 70 mm; surviving length is 38 mm. |
