Title |
Roman crossbow brooch |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy crossbow brooch fragment, missing one wing, central knob, foot and pin. Bent and fairly corroded, although gilding survives on the wings and upper bow. The wing is trapezoidal in section and is decorated on the top with a groove and two depressions, and on the front with a scalloped edge. The knob is globular with a terminal knop (an 'onion' knob) and has a moulding all the way round at its junction with the wing. The bow is trapezoidal in section and apparently undecorated, with a circular depression for the central knob at the top and a groove and a concave moulding at the bottom. The fragment of the foot is flattish and slightly wider than the bow. Just below the junction with the bow it steps down to become thinner but a short spine of thicker metal extends downwards. The reverse of the foot is slightly concave but the catchplate has long since disappeared. Surviving length 39 mm, surviving width 32 mm. Comparable elements to Hattatt nos. 1265 and 1267, i.e. Keller types 3 and 4. |
