Title
Roman nail (probably)
Description
English: A copper-alloy nail/stud of probable Roman date.

The head is sub-globular, being slightly flattened on the underside. The shaft is of square section, tapering to a point.

Dimensions: 21.1mm long, up to 7.2mm wide (head). Weight: 1.85g.

Similar nails were found in excavations in Colchester (Crummy 1983: 115). The wedge-like point and short length distinguish this piece from a clothes fastening or hair pin, suggesting it may have been used to secure or decorate furniture.
