Title |
Roman pin (profile). |
||
Description |
English: A Roman (1st to 4th centuries) copper-alloy pin: The head of the pin is bulbous with an oval section. Protruding from the base of the head, and integral, there is a rectangular sectioned, narrowed neck which is sited above a rectangle whose faces are decorated with a low-relief 'X'. Protruding from the lower edge is the shaft of the pin which is rectangular in section and quickly tapers to become oval in section, and tapering to a blunt point. The shaft is being in profile forming a sub 'L' shape. The pin measures 40.93mm long from the head to the apex of the bend, 6.08mm wide across the head. It weighs 2.8g.
This is a probably a Roman pin. At present, it is not possible to date the type more precisely but it likely to be a hair pin (Cool 1990, 148-182) but there is evidence for pins being used as dress fastenings as well (Geake 2001, 39). This pin does not fit neatly into Cool's classification.
