Roman pottery: Samian ware bowl
Description
English: One sherd of Samian ware/terra sigillata (Southern Gaulish (La Graufensenque) fabric). A hard fired, oxidised pinkish fabric with numerous white flecks. The surfaces are covered with with a dark red, waxy slip. The surfaces are quite abraded and chattered. A body sherd from a Dragendorf 29 bowl identifiable by the central cordon decorated with rouletting. There are also traces of trailing plant decoration. Wheelmade. The fabric and form date this vessel to the mid to late 1st (AD 40- 85) (Webster, P. 1996, Roman Samian Pottery in Britain, CBA Practical Handbook in Archaeology 13, p. 13 and p. 74 - 76)
