Title |
Roman samien ware |
||
Description |
English: A large body sherd of decorated Roman samian ware pottery (probably central Gaulish). The piece is part of a form 37 hemispherical bowl with a plain band below the lip. This type emerged c.AD 70 and became the most popular bowl form. Below the plain band is an ovolo (egg and tongue) border and below this is the decorated zone of the bowl. The decoration is a freestyle continuous scene depicting a lion with a panther (or boar) below it and facing the lion is a stag. There are small fan-shaped plants between and above the animals. The interior of the vessel is plain. The sherd weighs 133.41g and measures 133.9mm in width (diameter of vessel) and 90.6mm in length (height of vessel). The closest examples in the Castleford excavation report (Roman Castleford Volume III The Pottery) can be found on page 68, figure 34, Nos. 1012 & 1013. |
