Title
Roman vessel: Samian ware bowl fragment
Description
English: A sherd from a Roman samian ware decorated bowl. The sherd retains most of the rim and a panel of decoration. The decoration is worn but 2 or possibly 3 figures appear to be seated or lying on chairs, one figure, probably female, appears to have her knees bent outwards and is holding her ankles; a rather lewd pose. The slip is a dark brownish red and the fabric has a slight pinkish hue to it, suggesting that this is East-Gaulish Samian while the form of the bowl appears similar to Dragondorff 37. The bowl would have had a rim diameter of 17cm. This type of bowl and ware dates from c. AD 70-230.
