Title
Roman vessel
Description
English: Two base sherds, seven rim sherds and seventeen body sherds of Roman Samian ware, from kilns in either east or central Gaul. Many of the body sherds are tiny fragmented fragments. Five of the body sherds and one base sherd are decorated.

The decorated base sherd is just less than half a Dragendorff form 35 or 36, a cup or a dish with barbotine decoration on a curved rim. The decoration takes the form of leaves, although only a tiny amount of the rim survives on this fragment, showing a stem. The base itself is a ring-foot. This would originally have been c.50mm in diameter. the other base is flat and missing its 'rim'. It would have been c.120mm in diameter.

The rims are all plain.

The decorated body sherds show: rouletting, the lower half of a centaur plus ?snake, a swirl with a flower at its centre, ovolos, and sideways V shapes over elongated ovals.

The largest sherd, the Dragendorff 35 or 36, measures 97x63x6.3mm, the smallest (fragmented body) 9.2x6x4.1mm. The twenty-six Samian fragments collectively weigh 126.18g.
