Title
Roman vessel sherd
Description
English: Body sherd of Roman date, probably of New Forest parchment ware, possibly of Oxfordshire white ware dating to the 2nd to 4th century AD. The sherd has a pale buff fabric with abundent fine quartz temper and occasional pink-red inclusions up to 2.5mm, possibly iron ore. It is relatively thick (6.1mm excluding decoration) and the curve suggests a large vessel. It is decorated on the outer side with two parallel incised line and above this a row of applied barbotine teardrop shapes. The shapes are unusual large and crude. It has a brown red colour coat on the outer side. Abraded breaks. 12.66 grams.
