Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch, bottom
Description
English: Copper alloy Roman zoomorphic brooch dating to the 2nd century. The brooch shaped as a bird at rest; the body is domed with two parallel cast grooves down the back of the bird. The head and beak are set at 90 degrees to the body so that the brooch is 3-dimensional. At the tail end of the brooch, there is a small square lug with a tiny perforated hole through. On the base, the brooch has a rounded double pin-bar lug at the tail end and a small angular catchplate at the other end. The pin-bar lugs appear to be unfinished as there is no evidence of a piercing for the pin or bar. It is possible that the brooch was discarded as the catchplate is very small and does not have the necessary curved length of metal to catch the pin (although it is difficult to know whether this was a casting fault).

The brooch weighs 6.66g and measures 38.5mm in length, 16.7mm in width and 19mm in thickness (from head to base).

Similar examples of this type of brooch can be seen in Hattatts 'Ancient Brooches and other Objects', P.360, Fig.219.
