Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch.
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic brooch moulded in the form of a fly, dating to AD 100-200. It has a sub-triangular shape in plan with the shorter side being the rear edge of the wings of the insect. The back of the aforementioned edge has a longitudinal shallow recess to house the now lost spring mechanism. The front body of the fly is pointed oval in plan raising from the plan of the wings ending in a pointed head; it is very worn but details of the raised eyes and collared neck are still identifiable. The collared neck is decorated with a series of short transverse ridges. The back face of the body is hollow and the end of the head has a broken catch plate.

Cf Mackreth (2011, Vol. 2, p. 130, plate 127, no. 14449), although the closest example is hinged. For a similar brooch see NMS-0066D6 on this database.
