Title |
Roman zoomorphic brooch |
||
Description |
English: A Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the shape of a fish. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with enamel. Two marginal cells running the length of its body and tail are filled with degraded yellow? enamel. Between these cells, the copper alloy plate is decorated with progressively larger chevron shaped cells, representing scales. No enamel remains in these cells. The body of the fish is separated from the head by a crescent shaped cell filled with red enamel. This cell represents the gills of the fish. The eye of the fish is picked out as a ring shaped cell. No enamel remains in this cell. The fish has three fins represented by small triangular copper alloy extensions. Two extend from the dorsal area and one from the underside of the fish. On the reverse of the brooch, there is a scar where the pin attachment lug would have been. The lug is positioned where the body of the fish meets its tail. The catchplate is rectangular in shape and is positioned at the head of the fish. The brooch is bent into a curved shape and measures 33mm in length and a maximum of 9mm in width. |
