Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A corroded and incomplete copper-alloy Roman brooch. This brooch is a typical example of the 'Swimming waterfowl' series and probably dates from the mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD (see Hattatt, 1982, p. 164-5). A similar brooch, found nearby, is recorded on the PAS database - see BH-12BA82.

The brooch is a small example of its type. It is three-dimensional in form and probably depicts a heavily stylised duck. The body is sub-oval in plan, being widest at the neck end and tapering gradually towards the rounded tail end. The body is thin in section and has flat surfaces. On the corroded and encrusted upper surface is evidence of raised divisions which probably separate the wings from the body. The bird's neck extends upwards at approximately eighty degrees and curves into a small, stylised head with a short, pointed beak. No other facial features are visible. On the underside, the pin attachment is located at the tail end and consists of two parallel plates separated by a central slot from which a remnant of the pin protrudes. The damaged catchplate is located below the neck.

The brooch measures 22.6mm long, 8.5mm wide and 16.1mm high. The weight is 1.94g.
