Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A cast copper alloy zoomorphic brooch dating to the Roman period. The object is in the form of a seated or nesting bird, probably a hen. The object has a concavo-convex body and a solid projection at either end, the larger modelled as the head, and the smaller as the tail.

Projecting from below the tail is the casing for a hinged pin. Only the top of the pin remains within the casing due to an old break. The catchplate is missing. The body is moulded with a series of eight cells which contain light green enamel. On each side are two long sub-oval cells at the front of which are two small semi-circular cells. These represent the wings of the bird. At the top of the head is a slot which is inlaid with a strip of copper alloy. This probably formed the wattle of the bird when complete. Either side of the head is circular depression representing the eyes which would probably have contained enamel, now missing.

There is a large sub-rectangular perforation through one side of the object which occurred during antiquity. The brooch has a dark green patina and is in fair condition.

Similar examples can be found in Hattatt, (2000), p360 and Mackreth Plate type 4b1.
