Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A Roman copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch in the shape of a fish dating to the second century AD. The upper surface of the plate possesses enamelled and incised decoration. Two marginal cells running the length of its body and tail are filled with turquoise enamel. Between these cells, the copper alloy plate is decorated with progressively larger angular 'V' shaped stamps, representing scales. The tail of the fish is also marginally decorated with small horizontal incisions. The body of the fish is separated from the head by a crescent shaped cell, partially filled with red enamel. This cell represents the gills of the fish. They eye of the fish is represented as a ring shaped cell. This is filled with turquoise enamel. The fish has three fins represented by small triangular copper alloy extensions. Two extend from the dorsal area and one from the underside of the fish. On the reverse of the brooch, there is a semi-circular lug holding a sprung pin. The lug is positioned where the body of the fish meets its tail. The catchplate is trapezoidal in shape and is positioned at the head of the fish. The brooch measures 41mm in length and a maximum of 12mm in width. The brooch weighs 4.1g.
