Title
Roman zoomorphic duck brooch
Description
English: Incomplete and rather worn copper alloy enamelled Roman zoomorphic brooch in the form of a duck, missing its pin, loop and beak.

Its incomplete length is 20.5mm, from broken beak to broken loop. On the reverse, the spring has corroded in to place. The catchplate is worn and the curl has broken.
The neck is rather bent and the beak-break is quite sharp, suggesting it was possibly quite a recent break. The body is roughly oval in shape, being slightly rounder at the breast. It is divided into four segments, the outer two of which are wings and flatter than the central two, which still carry a trace of red enamel.
The metal is almost black in colour. The brooch is very similar in form and design to Hattatt nos.1169 and 1170 (the latter is from Wiltshire).

Max. width 7.5mm. Weighs 1.66g. 2nd century.
