Title |
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch dating to circa AD 43-150. It is cast in the form of a hippocamp. Its mouth is elongated and its eye formed by raised concentric circles set inside a circular recessed panel. The creature's neck leads into the body, which contains a lozenge-shaped panel inlaid with blue enamel. Set within the panel are three pellets laid out in a triangle, two of which contain traces of orange enamel. Emerging from one side of the of the panel are the hippocamp's forelegs. Its rear is formed of two elements: a fantail characterised by recessed rectangular strips and a now broken curled prehensile tail set above the fantail. The front face of the prehensile tail contains a comma shaped panel of blue enamel and a comparative example from Lincoln indicates the tail would have terminated in a curl containing an orange-enamelled pellet (<a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/57881">LIN-280A34</a>). The edges of the brooch are curved and its reverse is flat. The reverse contains a now corroded lug at one end and hemispherical catchplate at the other. The front and back have been tinned.
Length: 31.36mm; Width: 20.85mm; Thickness: 3.41mm; Weight: 5.33g. |
