Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy plate brooch dating to circa AD 43-200. It is a plate brooch of the hound/hare series. It consists of a running hound/hare in profile. The front face is comprised of the body. It has a reserved infilled area of discoloured blue enamel with some small areas of white. The head has a large circular eye with blue and a white enamel pupil. The lower legs, ears, tail and end of the snout are foreshortened but the body shape and hint of an upturned tail end is dog like.  The front legs, hind legs and tail or terminate in ancient breaks making precise designation into a Mackreth class difficult. The rear face has a hinged lug with part of the spring and a worn away catch-plate.

The brooch is similar to a range depicted in Mackreth 2011, Vol 2, pg 128, plate 125 falling into Mackreth's Animal plate brooch series 3c (Mackreth 2011, Vol 1, pg 182-183. Similar hound/hare brooches are recorded on the database at SF-8DC386 and SF-8CA12E.
