Title |
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a horse, only the head, neck and a fragment of the body now survives, the rest of it is missing due to old breaks. Very similar to a more complete example in Hattatt no.1182 (Hattatt, 1989, 359, fig 218, no 1182). It measures 23.26mm in height and 15.19mm in surviving width. The head is small and the nose long with a rounded terminal, there is an incised eye and a small pointed oval-shaped recess representing the ear. The neck is long and curving and has small slanted grooves running down its outer edge, representing the mane. The body fragment below the neck has two curvilinear recessed cells which would have held enamel originally. A small fragment of the upper leg survives, on the back face behind this there is an integral catchplate. |
