Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch. One end of the plate survives intact, preserving the hind quarters of the animal (quadruped?) as well as the pin lug, the remainder of the brooch now missing due to old breaks. The animal has a curving oval shaped body that tapers slightly towards a short, incomplete projecting tail and the remains of at least one hind leg. The front face of the plate has a large recessed field for enamel covering most of the body of the creature, but not trace of the original enamelling survives due to old breaks. A projecting semi-circular crest is present running along the back of the creature towards its tail. On the back face of the plate is an incomplete but integrally cast semi-circular double pin lug, missing the pin and half of one lug due to old breaks. The entire object has a worn and pitted green patina and measures 25.18mm in length, 19.32mm in height, 1.63mm in thickness and 2.36g in weight.

This is an incomplete zoomorphic plate brooch f Roman date. The depicted animal is probably a quadruped, and although its precise form is uncertain due to the preservation of the object, it perhaps finds parallels in brooches in the form of boars (e.g. SUSS-DB2C32 or WILT-A2E866) or similar, more slender, animals. It is of probable 2nd century AD date.
