Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a seated hen or cockerel. Only the neck and head of the bird survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The neck is conical in form, terminating in old breaks at its base, and with the remains of symmetrical enamelled decoration on the front face. This comprises diagonal rectangular fields containing orange enamel, surrounded by smaller oval fields containing the remains of dark blue enamel. At its top the neck tapers towards the head. This is flat, circular in form with a slight crest on the top of the head and large punched ring and dot eyes. The beak is missing due to old breaks. At the base of the breast/neck of the bird is a small and incomplete integral catchplate of uncertain form. The entire brooch measures 24.56mm in length/height, 17.60mm in width, 2.91mm in thickness at head (1.74mm at plate), and weighs 4.81g.

Similar hen or cockerel shaped zoomorphic Roman brooches are noted by Hattatt (1989: nos. 167, 620) and from Roman Colchester (Crummy, 1983: no. 75). These indicate a 2nd century AD date for the brooch.
