Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch (hare)
Description
English: A Roman cast copper-alloy enamelled zoomorphic plate brooch. The brooch is in the form of a hare, with breaks at its ears and feet. The body and eye of the hare are enamelled; the body in two lozenge-shaped and one upside down comma-shaped recesses, and the eye is a recessed ring. The enamel is green apart from the middle recess on the body, which is orange. On the reverse, the catch-plate is on the back of the head, and the remains of the pin and pin spring lugs are on the back of the tail end. The pin has broken off immediately after it separates from the spring. The metal of the brooch is covered in a dark-green patina. Hattatt (2000, 362; cf. refs. 612, 613, 1191) dates zoomorphic plate brooches to the 2nd century AD.
