Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch (probably)
Description
English: A copper-alloy fragment possibly from a cast zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a fish (c. 2nd century AD). This is perhaps the fish's tail which has become detached from the brooch's main body. The plate is flat by nature. It is broadly trapezoidal, slightly incurved at the end. At the break are two curving recesses on the upper surface that follow the edges of the brooch before stopping short of the end. At the end are numerous finely incised longitudinal nicks on the upper surface. An example of a plate brooch in the form of a fish from the Lincolnshire/Humberside border can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 362; ref. 1198). This fragment has a mid-green patina overall but is also slightly corroded in places. No traces of enamel appear to survive in the recessed cells.
