English: Seattle's 1889 fire started at Front Street (First Avenue) and Madison Street in midafternoon. As it swept through the downtown area, John Collins, owner of the Occidental Hotel, tried to buy up the buildings across the street. His idea was to level the buildings to protect his hotel from the spreading flames. Collins had no luck, and his elegant hotel was in ruins by early evening.
This photo, taken just after the 1889 fire, shows the ruins of the once-elegant Occidental Hotel at James Street and Mill Street (Yesler Way). Collins later built the Hotel Seattle at this site. A militia guard and a group of men stand nearby.
