Handwritten in album: Married by the missionary, this shy bride of 14 runs away from her husband in the dark and slept here all night PH Coll 49.77

Traditional Eskimo marriage involved the parents of all parties agreeing to the arrangement and then the new couple moving in together. The marriages that the missionaries insisted on were very different and many Eskimo girls ran away from their new husbands.
