Description

Russian prisoners landing (McGee 9124), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: "Russian prisoners, taken at battle of Tokuriji landing at Mitsugahama, Japan en route to Matsuyama June 28, 1904. Presented by Mr. Ogumi of Dogo, near Matsuyama."

During the Russo-Japanese War, a small group of American nurses, led by Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee, volunteered for a six-month tour of duty to Japan to treat both Russian and Japanese wounded soldiers. These women were guests of the Red Cross Society of Japan, and served in a Japanese hospital during their time. They returned in November 1904.

The Russo-Japanese War was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over territory in Manchuria and Korea. The war began in February 1904 and ended in September 1905, when Tsar Nicholas II decided to negotiate an end due to domestic unrest. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt mediated (for which he earned a Nobel Peace Prize), and the treaty formally ending the war was signed on Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
