Description

A Sé de Braga, a mais antiga arquidiocese de Portugal é o ex-libris da cidade. Mandada construir no séc. XII por D. Henrique e D. Teresa, que têm os seus túmulos no claustro, rivalizava o seu poder com a Sé de Santiago de Compostela. Nela se encontram testemunhos artísticos dos vários séculos que atravessou. Do estilo românico inicial, conservam-se a Porta do Sol, a planta com deambulatório, o pórtico principal e a absidíola do claustro de Santo Amaro. Foram seus arquitectos os prelados do Mosteiro de Cluny (França), São Giraldo e Maurício Brudino. No séc. XV, o gótico impôs-se na construção da galilé de entrada no templo. No interior, podemos encontrar um túmulo de talhe gótico-flamengo, pertencente ao filho do rei D. João I, o Infante D. Afonso. Do reinado de D. Manuel, no século seguinte, introduziram-se outros elementos decorativos em que se destaca a Pia Baptismal e, no exterior da capela-mor, um nicho com a estátua de Nossa Senhora do Leite atribuída a Nicolau Chanterenne, que integra o brasão da cidade. O estilo barroco, não deixou também de marcar presença, sobretudo na decoração interior dos altares, nas obras de talha dourada, no grandioso orgão da capela-mor e nas duas curiosas torres sineiras, que marcam a fachada exterior.
