Summary
[edit]DescriptionSE section - USS Maine Mast Memorial - Arlington National Cemetery - 2013-03-15.jpg |
English: Looking west-northwest at the rear of the USS Maine Mast Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. It was designed by Nathan C. Wyeth and dedicated on May 30, 1915. The base of the memorial consists of a circular mausoleum built of granite and marble, into which is set the main mast of the USS Maine. The memorial commemorates the 260 U.S. Navy sailors who died aboard the USS Maine when it exploded under mysterious circumstances on February 15, 1898.
There are 23 panels carved into the sides of the memorial, on which are carved the names and occupations of those who died aboard the Maine. |
