Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy Iron Age to Roman Colchester brooch. The head has short, flattened wings, a rectangular cross-section forward facing hook in the centre and half of an integral two coil copper alloy spring still attached to one side of the rear. The other separate half of the spring is now missing along with the pin itself The bow is narrow, undecorated and tapers to a sharp point at the foot. To the reverse of the foot is a triangular openwork catchplate pierced with three small holes.
Colchester brooches were used during the middle decades of the first century AD and possibly earlier (see Mackreth's (2011, 246) re-dating of the King Harry Lane cemetery). Length: 38.8mm, width of head: 13.3mm, thickness of head: 8.0mm, width of bow: 3.6mm, thickness of bow: 4.5mm, weight: 2.32g |
