Title |
SOM-75C4D1: Roman samian ware vessel |
||
Description |
English: A decorated samian ware (terra sigilata) vessel body shard. The shard appears to come from just above the base of a deep bowl or similar vessel. The hard fabric is light orangy-brown in colour, with a matt orange-brown slip. It is tempered with fine sand, sparse fine mica, occasional small fragments of iron ore (<1mm) and rare small white, chalky fragments (<1mm). It has a finely irregular fracture. It is likely to be of Central Gaulish (Lezoux) manufacture. The outer surface is decorated with a motif that appears fairly typical of the Lezoux potters (Webster 1996, pp.83-6). The design features blocks formed from beaded borders containing festoons, human figures and animals. These are now quite difficult to make out as the shard is very worn. Tyres (1996, p.113) tells us that the main phase of production and export of these wares took places between c. AD 120 to the later 2nd century.
