Notes

"Sampler in the making 1797. Worked by my father's first wife, Elizabeth Collins."

Unfinished samplers ask questions instead of supplying answers. The provenance of this “sampler in the making” says it was stitched in 1797, making its layout avant-garde. The two verses are either misquoted or incomplete, the outline of a building, perhaps a church, is suggested but not confirmed, and the cat is so stylistically and technically different to the motifs on the rest of the cloth that it may have been added at a later date by a different stitcher. The other motifs and border patterns are consistent with the date of provenance, and the identifying initials recorded seem unrelated to the stitcher.
