Dr. S. G. Elbert, School Leader, Dies, Was 73. Physician Helped Cause Of Public Education Here, Building Named for Him. Dr. Samuel G. Elbert, Sr., 1000 French Street, prominent physician and leader in education, died of a kidney ailment this morning in St. Francis Hospital. was 73 years old. He had undergone an operation Wednesday, entering the hospital a month ago after being in ill health since September. Dr. Elbert for years devoted considerable time to the advancement of public education. From 1927 to 1931. he was a member of the Wilmington Board of Education and in appreciation for his service, the board in 1930 named one of the new grade schools after him. Until a short time ago. Dr. Elbert was one of the oldest practicing physicians in the city. Born in Maryland. Dr. Elbert was born November 7, 1855, on a farm near Chestertown, Maryland. the youngest of five children of the late James and Caroline Elbert. His parents were active- in the Methodist Episcopal Church. His father gave the land and built the first school for Negro children in that section (of Kent County. Md. Dr. Elbert received his early education in the, primary schools of Chestertown and took his premedical courses at Howard University, Washington. D. C. and was graduate from Howard Medical School 1891. He started his internship at the time he entered the medical school, that practice being in use at the time. Studied at U. of P. In the autumn after his graduation, Dr. Elbert went to the University of Pennsylvania for further study, takins the post-graduate and full undergraduate medical courses there. He received a degree from that school in 1834. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Ella L. Smith of Newport, Rhode Island, and a son. Dr. Samuel O. Elbert. Jr., a member of the Wilmington Board of Health. Dr. Elbert was associated with his wife's brother, Dr. D. A. Smith, from 1914 to 1929. As a life-long Republican Dr. Elbert was active in city and state affairs for many years. He was delegate from Delaware to two national Republican conventions. He was a trustee of State College for Colored Students at Dover from 1916 to 1933.
