Description

We took a day long side trip to the Monterey, CA area to visit the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Near Monterey is a beautiful little lighthouse called the Point Pinos Lighthouse. It is a very old lighthouse and has been active since 1855. The facility is open to tours, so we took a few minutes to photograph it and walk through it.

It is equipped with a 3rd order fixed fresnel lens but exhibits a flashing light. The flash was originally produced by putting an "eclipser" device inside the lens, between the lamp and the lens itself. The eclipser is on display in the basement of the lighthouse. Currently it is flashed electronically.

This photo shows the eclipser. It is turned by a clockworks mechanism that is powered by a falling counterweight. The weight descended down the center of the tower and when fully wound, would turn the eclipser for about 4.5 hours.
