English: So-called Portrait of Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780), but is probably a depiction of Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1673-1742).
  • Identification proposed by user Ecummenic (talk) based on the comparison with some portraits of Empress Wilhelmine (see images below) and the lack of physical resemblance of the sitter of this portrait to other representations of Maria Theresa.

Italiano: "Nella galleria di ritratti con cui si apre il percorso museale, la figura dell’Imperatrice Maria Teresa torna in tre diverse versioni: quella “matrimoniale” (copia da Martin van Meytens) e questa più nota che la vede abbigliata in nero, come imponeva lo stato della vedovanza, effige riproposta anche nell’ovale sovraporta.

Non stupirà la presenza ripetuta dell’immagine regale in città se lo storico locale Giovanni Romani ricorda che “il suo dolce, discreto e giusto governo teneva questi sudditi oltremodo affezionati a quella incomparabile regnante”.

Casalmaggiore, allora parte del Ducato di Milano, era entrata nel 1706, dopo oltre un secolo e mezzo di dominazione spagnola, nell’ampia compagine dell’Impero asburgico segnato, per gran parte del secolo, dal lungo regno (1740-80) di Maria Teresa e di suo figlio Giuseppe II (1780-90), autori di numerose "riforme illuminate" volte ad attuare un razionale controllo del territorio.

Fu Maria Teresa a conferire a Casalmaggiore il titolo di "città" nel 1754, inaugurando un periodo particolarmente fiorente anche per le arti e la cultura.
