Description
English: On August 29, 2016, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite flew over the southern Atlantic Ocean and acquired a true-color image of sea ice surrounding the South Sandwich Islands.

The southern section of the image shows thick, bright white pack ice floating over the ocean waters. Moving northwards the ice shows cracks and irregular surfaces, indicating thinner, less stable ice than further south. In the far north the sea ice thins further, giving the appearance of icy lace lying across the dark blue ocean. Near each island, dark blue pockets of ocean remain mostly free of ice, likely due to currents offshore of each island.

The South Sandwich Islands are a rugged, mountainous group of islands that lie in a remote area of the South Atlantic Ocean, more than 860 mi (1,384 km) south-southeast from the Falkland Islands. The ocean around the islands stays cold year-round. They are often surrounded by pack ice from May until November.
