Summary
[edit]DescriptionSeal of Reginald de Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Wilton (died 1308), Barons' Letter, 1301.png | 1611 Drawing by Nicholas Charles, Lancaster Herald, of seal of Reginald de Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Wilton (died 1308), of Wilton Castle, Bridstow, Herefordshire, appended to the Barons' Letter to the Pope, 1301 (A Exemplar). Circumscribed: "Sigil(lum) Reginaldi de Grey" ("Seal of Reginald de Grey"). He signed as "Reginaldus de Grey Dominus de Ruthyn" (lord of the manor of Ruthin, Denbighshire, North Wales). (Source: Cokayne, G. E.; H. A. Doubleday; Duncan Warrand & Lord Howard de Walden, eds. (1926). The Complete Peerage, or a history of the House of Lords and all its members from the earliest times (Gordon to Hustpierpoint), Vol. 6 (2nd ed.). London: The St. Catherine Press, p.172 & note (g)). He fought at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298, and his arms are recorded in the Falkirk Roll for "Reinaud de Gray", with a label of three points gules as his difference. He married Maud de Longchamp (d.1302), daughter and heiress of Sir Henry de Longchamp of Wilton, and thus inherited that castle. The manor and castle of Ruthin later became the seat of a prominent cadet branch (the most prominent of all), and adopted its own difference to the Grey arms, namely three torteax in chief. |
