Description
English: Ninth Secretary Robert McCormick Adams (1984-1994) with Secretary-Elect Ira Michael Heyman (1994-1999) in the Enid A. Haupt Garden after the May 25, 1994 press conference in the Smithsonian Institution Building announcing the "changing of the guard." Heyman came to the Smithsonian Institution from the Department of the Interior where he served as counselor to Bruce Babbitt Secretary of the Interior and deputy assistant secretary for policy. From 1980 to 1990 Heyman was chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley and is also former Smithsonian Institution regent.
