Title |
sherd (exterior) |
||
Description |
English: Pottery body sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. There are circular impressions, some in rows, on the exterior and the interior of the sherd. The fabric has inclusions of mica, pale felspars and possibly dark augite and has a mid brown reduced interior and an oxidised orange exterior. The fabric is like the remainder of the Grooved Ware pottery from this and other fields on Clodgy Moor. The decoration has known parallels in other Grooved Ware assemblages outside the county and therefore can be identified as Grooved Ware, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).
Anna Brindley in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates similarly decorated Grooved Ware vessels from Redscar Bridge, Northumberland and Lechlade, Gloucestershire on page 142, Fig.14.4, Nos.4 & 5. |
