Title
sherd (exterior)
Description
English: Pottery rim sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. There is a horizontal groove parallel to rim which tapers at the upper apex. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars and dark augite and is dark brown throughout. This sherd is likely to have come from the same vessel as the previous record CORN-FD1404 (521.8) as the depth and thickness of the groove can be matched at one end of this rim sherd to the larger sherd. This type of decoration is seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).

Anna Brindley in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates similarly decorated Grooved Ware vessels from Durrington Walls in Wiltshire, on page 141, Fig.14.3, Nos.8, 11 & 12.
